White Noise
Release Date: December 30 on Netflix
Things are about to get a little absurd. Adapted from Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel of the same name, the darkly comic White Noise takes the mundanity of life and cranks it up a lot of notches. Writer-director Noah Baumbach, screenwriter of films including The Squid and the Whale, Marriage Story, and the upcoming Barbie, brings to the screen the story of college professor Jack Gladney (Adam Driver) who is barely scraping by in the apocalyptic-esque 1980s with his young children and wife Babette (Greta Gerwig). A freak accident triggers the eccentric family to question the meaning of life, death, and everything in between.
Slow Horses (Season 2 Finale)
Release Date: December 30 on Apple TV+
The unconventional spy thriller Slow Horses has proven to be a big hit for Apple TV+. The streamer believes in it so much that it actually renewed it for Seasons 3 and 4 before Season 2 premiered. The series follows spy Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a notorious, unfiltered, and quite gaseous leader of MI5 rejects known as Slow Horses, who, despite their less-than-flattering reputation, are determined to prove that they are, in fact, a worthy bunch of English spies. The thriller also stars Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christopher Chung, and Rosalind Eleazar.
Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb
Release Date: December 30 in Select Theaters
“They both want the best book possible, they both do. And they both want it for each other.” Literary legends Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb have quite the history together. Renowned editor Gottlieb has been editing the works of respected history biographer Caro for 50 years. As Caro, 86, puts the finishing touches on his final volume in his Lyndon B. Johnson series, Gottlieb, 91, not-so-patiently waits to edit the hefty installment. Lizzie Gottlieb’s documentary features the duo’s reflections on their working relationship (which often includes bickering) and interviews with many of their admirers, including Ethan Hawke, Conan O’Brien, and Barack Obama. The beautiful film was an Official Selection in the Tribeca Film Festival.
Tulsa King (Episode 8)
Release Date: December 30 on Paramount+
Taylor Sheridan’s television takeover continues with mafia series Tulsa King, the first TV role for Rocky and Rambo star Sylvester Stallone. The Paramount+ series follows the unexpected next chapter in mafia man Dwight “The General” Manfredi’s (Stallone) life post-prison. He might have done time, but his mind is still stuck on crime, as he takes his skills to his place of exile: Tulsa, Oklahoma. As we near the Season 1 finale, the FBI narrows in on Dwight by interrogating those in his inner circle, and the Black Macadam gang revs up its engines. The crime drama, which was renewed for Season 2, also stars Martin Starr, Andrea Savage, Jay Will, and Max Casella.
George & Tammy (Episode 5)
Release Date: January 1 on Showtime
Country music legends Tammy Wynette and George Jones got the long-overdue limited series treatment with the aptly-titled Showtime series George & Tammy. Starring Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon as the titular musicians, Abe Sylvia’s drama series follow the duo’s magical collaboration on stage and their toxic love behind the scenes. The penultimate episode follows the messy aftermath of the couple’s divorce and the polar opposite career positions they find themselves in. Chastain and Shannon are great in their respective roles, but Chastain’s performance in Episode 5 will take your breath away.
