The iPhone 16 Pro could come with an under-display Face ID technology that could eliminate the ugly notch and reduce the size of the Dynamic Island.
A new report suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro could come with an under-display Face ID technology. The iPhone 16 launch is still more than a year and a half away, with the company expected to announce the iPhone 15 series later this year with a significant design change, at least for the base models. Rumors suggest that the Dynamic Island will be on all four models this time around. Only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have the Dynamic Island, while the base iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus still rock the legacy notch first seen in the iPhone X in 2017.
According to the South Korean tech blog The Elec, Apple will use under-display sensors for the Face ID system in the iPhone 16 Pro, leaving only a visible punch-hole camera in the front, making the phone look similar to most Android devices with a punch-hole camera. The report only mentions the iPhone 16 Pro while discussing the under-display technology, which means the base iPhone 16 models may not get the new feature. If the rumor turns out to be accurate, it will be a way for Apple to differentiate the Pro models from the base models in its 2024 iPhone lineup, with design elements expected to be similar this year.
Under Display Face ID in iPhone 16 Pro
The report also says that Apple could use an under-display camera in future iPhones, with the front camera module invisible when not in use. It also reiterates that Apple will bring the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone models this year instead of limiting it to the high-end models, as it did with the iPhone 14 series last year.
This is not the first time rumors are circulating about under-display Face ID coming to the iPhone. It was first reported last year by tipsters Ross Young and Ming-Chi Kuo, who claimed the technology is unlikely to be incorporated into the iPhone before 2024. There were also rumors about Touch ID possibly returning to iPhones via under-display technology like Android devices, but Kuo shot down those rumors, saying it won't happen in 2023 or 2024.
The latest report seemingly confirms rumors that Apple is looking to move away from the punch-hole Face ID technology and introduce a newer and cleaner design by hiding the Face ID sensors under the display. Recent reports show that under-display Face ID will make it to the iPhone eventually, while under-display Touch ID may not come to iPhones any time soon.
